The Successful Evolution Of Slots

The popular game of slots has evolved over the last century into the fun pastime we currently enjoy. The first real slot machine was made by Charles Fey in 1895. Named “the Liberty Bell” it was one of the first electronic gambling machines, and was the first slot machine to use symbols.

Its largest payout was fifty cents for three “liberty bell” symbols on one line. Supposedly this new invention became so popular that Fey could not build enough to keep up with the demand, and soon others were creating their own knock-off versions.

After “the Liberty Bell” came the next famous design, “the Operator Bell”. This game bore the fruit motif that is the most well-known today. By this time anti-gambling movements were gaining in the government, and many mechanical gambling platforms were outlawed. Over time, however, their popularity became undeniable and the slot machine spread slowly into what we know today.

In the 1960′s the electronic version began to take over, which helped casinos as it became more difficult for people to trick the machine into giving undeserved payouts. Soon pulling the arm of the machine no longer became necessary, as microchips and other new technology came to determine how to spin the reels.

This in turn made the game more expensive for casinos to operate. Nevertheless, the game never faded in popularity, and they continue to be an important facet of every gambling floor.

The modern version comes in all sorts of types, and there are more motifs and combinations than ever. Some more recent introductions include video and online playing, which have been gaining in popularity in recent years. The online version can be played anywhere, including the comfort of your own home.

Although the game of slots may have started over one hundred years ago, it has been adapted and continues to be a favorite of casino-goers everywhere. Technology will only change the way it is played, not change the game itself or its popularity.
